Sentimental Saturdays (WOW Hits 2015 Vs WOW Hits 2005)

wow hits 2015  wow hits 2005

In honour of the new WOW Hits compilation releasing in September, I have decided to make this sentimental Saturdays post about a comparison of WOW Hits, namely, the upcoming WOW Hits 2015, and its counterpart 10 years ago, WOW Hits 2005. While I have discussed the logistics of a WOW Hits list a few Sentimental Saturdays posts back, here I discuss about the slow phasing out of certain artists and the inclusion of a few more when comparing both lists, and the fact that some of these artists that were on previous WOW compilations are just as prominent, relevant, encouraging and motivating now as they were back when they were ‘popular’.

Futuristic Fridays and Sentimental Saturdays (The Future of Albums)

cds

Music has always been a medium where people communicated ideas, and said what was on their hearts, regardless of whether it was controversial, heartfelt, emotive, encouraging or even confronting. Music has always been a universal language of sorts- whatever emotion you were feeling (or still feeling), there is possibly a song out there that speaks directly to you and your needs. I can remember back when I was a teenager, purchasing albums and listening just for listening sake, enjoying music for what it is- music. Call me old fashioned, but I am not looking forward to the day when CD’s become out of print.

Sentimental Saturdays (2 Disc DVD’s)

dvds

Can you remember a time when Blu Ray Discs didn’t exist? Anyone? Gee, I may be showing my age on this one, but there was in fact a time where Blu Ray discs weren’t available (yes- 10 years ago I think), and DVD’s were the crème of the crop. During the 2000s, when online viewing of movies wasn’t much of a craze, purchasing DVD’s was the way to go if you wanted to watch your favourite movie that you saw in the cinemas a few months prior. While prices of DVD’s have relatively stayed the same throughout the years; what has drastically changed has been the amount of bonus features on the DVD, and how many discs in the DVD package.

Sentimental Saturdays (Recording from CD’s/Radio to Cassette Tapes)

cassette tape

I can still remember back to during the time when me and my brother were in primary school. No DVD’s, no iPads, Nintendo Wiis, Netflix, possibly not even iTunes, Foxtel or laptops even. Just the cathode ray tube TV, the CD/cassette tape recorder, and a clunky old computer that was probably Windows 2000. It was during those days that life was simpler, and we were able to not care that much about all the technological advances that were happening, even during that time. Call it ignorance, or call it just a happy childhood where worry wasn’t an issue, I can remember back to one particular pastime that our family, especially me and my brother, partook in- recording from CD’s and the radio to cassette tapes.

Sentimental Saturdays (Round the Twist)

round the twist

As you can probably know from my profile page on the website, I am currently an avid TV show watcher. Current shows like Parenthood, Once Upon a Time, Person of Interest, Castle, The Mentalist, Orphan Black, Switched at Birth, Continuum and Arrow; and previous shows like One Tree Hill, MONK, Psych, Packed to the Rafters, Eureka, Being Erica and Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes; have all, in one way or another, shown me how TV shows can be great, emotive, prolific, encouraging, motivating and entertaining all at once.

Sentimental Saturdays (A Life Without Internet)

click

What do people do without internet? No, serious. What do people do? Close your eyes for a second and imagine that life was simpler- no internet (or minimal access to it). Pretty much rewind back to when you were younger, when the world wasn’t as connected as now, and when all you probably cared about was watching TV (on the TV), Nintendo (or Playstation), or catching up with friends- face to face, rather than nowadays with facebook, skype, video-phones and iPads.

Sentimental Saturdays (WOW Hits CD’s/DVDs)

wow hits 2004

WOW Hits- the series released each year amongst the CCM circle since 1996 that is becoming more and more of a hot-topic and one that clearly divides avid Christian music fans (myself included) as debates about song choices and artist inclusions/exclusions reign from year to year. Regardless of my objective opinions on WOW Hits, these albums always hold dear to my heart, with the very first WOW album I listened to, WOW Hits 2004, being a catalyst in me branching out in my listening of CCM music, when I heard the compilation in 2003. Receiving this album in the mail as a competition from Word Bookstores, I would say this album is my favourite in a sentimental sense. From artists like Newsboys, ZoeGirl, Third Day, Jaci Velasquez, and Nichole Nordeman, to Avalon, Mark Schultz, FFH, MercyMe and Jeremy Camp; the 2003 edition to the ‘best songs in Christian music’ was able to show me a world of Christian music I hardly knew at that point in time. In 2006 I bought WOW Hits 2006 and WOW Hits 2005 from Koorong, and since then my love for WOW Hits hasn’t wavered.

Sentimental Saturdays: Carman

carman

Who was your favourite music artist growing up? The music that you’d listen to for hours and hours because you could? The songs that you would know back to front, and the lyrics you could recite in a heartbeat without any wrong words, even if you have last heard the song a while ago? Has any music artist that you listened to while growing up had an influence in who you are today?

Sentimental Saturdays: Video Stores

video stores

Who remembers video stores? You know, the stores that stock new release videos tapes (the ones that are clunky and take up heaps of space in your cabinet) and DVD’s? The ones where you travel to on a Friday night and hire movies for a few days (or a week) and you and a group of friends watch (or even binge-watch) movies from 6pm til the wee hours of the next morning?

Sentimental Saturdays: Introduction (Nintendo 64)

nintendo 64- 1080

Sentimental- the definition is pretty simple. Something of your past that you hold onto, not because of any monetary value, but because of the intrinsic value you place on it. It may not necessarily be the most popular thing of that time period, but nevertheless, you hold onto it because of the fond memories it gives you. In this weekly post of Sentimental Saturdays, we discuss the things that make us remember the times where life was simple, good, and sometimes less complicated than the lives we live currently.
