My Predictions: 2014/2015 Fall/Midseason TV Network schedule

First of all, let me say this outright that I’m not a very big TV watcher. Though in the past my slate of shows for the summer season and fall season have slowly risen over the past few years, it hasn’t gotten to the point where I can say that I watch every single show that a network orders to series. Because the fact of the matter is that I have not watched every single show on the planet, and there are probably bigger TV fans than myself.

I have not seen shows like Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, 24, House, Bones, Numbers, Lost, Fringe, 30 Rock, The Office, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives, The OC, The Shield, Big Love, Boston Legal and Damages, which are some of the shows I see being sold quite a lot of copies of whenever I venture out to my local DVD store, JB Hi Fi in Eastgardens. If one were to look through my collection of shows, the vast majority (I think around 90% or more) of shows I have actively seen and followed have debuted from 2010 onwards, with only One Tree Hill, Monk, Life On Mars, Ashes To Ashes, White Collar, Royal Pains, Being Erica, Terminator: TSCC, Chuck, Packed To The Rafters, The Mentalist and Castle the representatives that debuted pre-2010 (which ironically, comprise of some of my favourite shows ever, so maybe that’s God indirectly telling me to give some shows that debuted pre-2010 a chance…)

Yet recently I have been very intrigued by TV shows in general. Ever since Once Upon A Time and Person Of Interest debuted around 3 years ago, I have always been active and eagerly anticipating network TV renewal/cancellation/pick up/schedule times for network TV shows (around the 2nd week of May), as it is always fun to guess whether your show gets picked up or not, which shows are cancelled or renewed, and then thinking about the TV schedule, to see what is saved for the midseason, and to see whether show A and show B (which you watch both of) are pitted against in each other on the same night.

Unlike the upfronts for summer shows (which are fluid and not during a specific week of the year, hence not as frantic and frenzied), there are endless permutations of what is on the schedule, and the week before the upfronts (when NBC, CW, FOX, ABC and CBS announce their schedules) is very hectic and crazy, with people either acting ecstatic or very bitter and angry on message boards on IMDB or elsewhere. Though in my opinion cable summer shows are of higher calibre and superior in quality to the fall network shows in general, it’s just interesting to see various opinions of people during the first week of May, and sometimes laugh on the inside at how attached to a show people are, that they exclaim they would boycott a channel if their show is canned (which I haven’t vowed to do, despite me not understanding the cancellations of Go On from last year, and Almost Human from this year).

But what is the purpose of TV, and why are people so invested in a storyline that they know is fiction? Well, because of the underlying themes that many shows present. Like movies, shows give us character growth, with most times us identifying with the lead protagonist, or at times, the main antagonist. Gone are the days that the bad guy in season one is the bad guy all throughout the series (think Monroe from Revolution, Root from Person Of Interest, or Regina and Rumple from Once Upon A Time) and I think presently that characters are becoming more and more complex now than they ever were before.

Themes of good defeating evil, or sometimes the transforming from evil to good, friendship, strength, determination, camaraderie, loyalty, unconditional love and sacrifice are all interwoven in many of the series that I enjoy, and in 2014/2015, the new and old shows here are no different, with many genres encompassed, and many universal qualities about the human condition being explored and tackled. So who’s eager to see what I think has a good chance of being the schedule for 2014 and 2015? Who wants to know briefly what each show is about? Read on the next few pages to find out!
