Initial thoughts: Phil Wickham always wows me. He always sets the bar high, and he always goes above and beyond anything that I would ever expect. After instantly connecting with and loving every single album from Phil that I’ve listen to from start to finish (starting with Response and then The Ascension, Children Of God, Living Hope, Hymn Of Heaven and I Believe – I’m not that familiar with Phil’s first three studio albums!); I had high hopes for Song Of The Saints. And boy, did Phil exceed everything I was hoping for and everything I was anticipating. He’s one of my favourite worship artists currently (and maybe ever!), and he’ll definitely be your favourite worship artist too!

Reason to listen: Phil Wickham is such a vibrant, energetic, biblically sound and engaging worship leader. His songs are Holy Spirit anointed. And that’s that. Every time you listen to a Phil Wickham song, you know you’re getting quality.

Reason to buy: Just buy. Let’s figure out the reason later. But seriously, Song Of The Saints is a superb worship album. That should be the only reason.

Reason to skip: What have you been smoking or drinking? Just joking, you’re allowed to skip this album if you want to. But seriously, why would you want to?

No. of singles and radio-friendly melodies/fan favourites: 5 (The King Is In The Room, What An Awesome God, Homesick For Heaven, Song Of The Saints, So So Good)

Is the album relevant and relatable in 2025 (2 years out!)? Why/why not?: It’s a worship album. It’s always relevant. But seriously, Phil’s albums have always stood the test of time, and Song Of The Saints is no different.

No of guest artists: One (a spoken word refrain in What If I Told You with Billy Graham), but other than that, none. Yet Phil’s pristine voice more than carries the weight and emotion and lyrical and biblical truth of each of the tracks.

Does it have heart?: Phil’s passion is infectious and his heart for Jesus is admirable and remarkable. In an age where some ‘Christians’ have deconstructed for one reason ro another, Phil’s steadfast faith is outstanding and incredible. He doesn’t show signs of stopping or slowing down, and it seems that right now, Song Of The Saints is his magnum opus thus far. I mean, Phil’s releasing a deluxe edition of the album next month with 18 more tracks, so… that’s telling you something, don’t you think?

Does it have replay value: Yes this album does. I found myself enjoying all the songs way more the second, third, fourth time round compared to the first. I’m sure you all will too!

Uniqueness?: Sadly (or happily if you prefer!), this sounds like other Phil Wickham albums, and sounds like most other worship albums. It’s not a negative though in my own opinion, and it is Phil’s distinct voice and passion that make this album unique enough, and that’s all you need to be drawn in and presented with a unique worshipful experience.

Timeless message for today? A message for the time of release in 2025?: See the answer to “Is the album relevant and relatable in 2025 (2 years out!)?”. Tweak and say something similar. And there’s your answer. In 50 years’ time, Song Of The Saints undoubtedly will be on everyone’s list for ‘best 20 worship albums of the 2020’s’. And that’s a fact.

Closing thoughts: There’s no doubt about it: Phil Wickham has this uncanny ability to write gems, which on the surface may be very underrated, and could slip under the radar; but defying logic quickly rise to become anthems for the church and hits on the radio. Ever since hit chart topping single “Grace” and “After Your Heart”, Phil has just kept churning out hit after hit- accessible for the church yet lyrically sound and complex, and also not threatening nor condemning either. From explosive and vibrant hits such as “At Your Name (Yahweh, Yahweh)”, “Battle Belongs”, “Living Hope”, “Til I Found You”, “Wonderful”, “The Jesus Way”, “Back To Life”, “This Is Our God”, “It’s Always Been You”, “Reason I Sing”, “My All In All”, “The Secret Place”, “I’ll Always Love You” and “This Is Amazing Grace”, to other inspiring melodies such as “Love Of God”, “I Believe”, “Sunday Is Coming”, “Your Love Awakens Me”, “Safe”, “Beautiful”, “Great Things”, “Hymn Of Heaven”, “His Name Is Jesus”, “Glory”, “Heaven Fall Down”, “When My Heart Is Torn Asunder”, “House Of the Lord”, “1000 Names”, “God Of Revival”, and “This Love Will Last Forever” (did I name, along with “Grace” and “After Your Heart”, a potential greatest hits album?); Phil has shown us that quality work and long lasting impressions can and often do result from persistent effort in one’s craft and the desires that God has put in our hearts. And as such, the big, bold and grandiose moments in Song Of The Saints, along with the reverent, quiet and simple moments, remind us just how good of a worship leader and a songwriter Phil actually is. But if you don’t resonate with this project, then I strongly encourage you to listen to it again. And then another time. Phil will wear you down eventually, I guarantee it!

My new album ‘Song Of The Saints’ is out now!! I pray these songs bring hope, life, joy and peace to any person who listens to them. May it lift eyes to heaven, and bring people to the feet of Jesus…Every time I step into a studio, write a song, or lead people in worship, I am reminded that music is a gift – and I am so grateful for it. I’ve never been more excited or proud of a record! Every single song from my new album ‘Song Of The Saints’ holds so much meaning and testimony for me. My heart is bursting not only to sing them to people, but to sing them with people. I pray that wherever they are heard and sung, they bring life, hope, joy, and conviction.
