Oh how different a week is. And…oh how different a year is! How quickly can the world be flipped on its head- one minute everyone is fine, and then the next everyone isn’t! At the start of the year, we were thinking that we all could conquer the world, that nothing could ever, ever go wrong, and that we’d all be invincible. That we’d all be like Bruce Willis in Die Hard, and be like John McClane and live to see another day. Yet in the span of a matter of minutes, moments and horrifying days, weeks and months, we’ve seen COVID-19 destroy lives, and shake the core foundation of who we are as human beings. Particularly for me as an Australian, who has also had to endure the January bushfires…well life can be pretty tough.

Sometimes you’re looking all over your shoulder in the midst of all of the lockdown restrictions thinking when it’s all going to be better, and then you hear the government say to be prepared for life as we know it to stay like this for 6 months at least. It’s a difficult time that we’re living in, and I guess right now when we’re cooped up at home, the best thing to do is to try to keep to our routines and find something to encourage us during this time of pain, hardship and struggle. For me my solace has been music- music has the power to say things that verbal words cannot, for music is I believe the universal language that can tug at and capture your soul even if you don’t want it to. Music has a habit of creeping in and permeating the very essence of who we are and revealing parts of ourselves we might not have known before. And especially now with COVID-19 hanging around until…I don’t really know; now’s the time for some uplifting music for the soul! And what better way than to listen to country singer Thomas Rhett sing his latest single “Be A Light”, along with his friends Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott (from Lady Antebellum), Chris Tomlin and Keith Urban?

Before I go on, let me just say that I don’t know Thomas Rhett or his music from a bar of soap. Call me ignorant or whatever you want, but for one reason or another, I’ve stuck to my bubble of Christian artists for quite a long time. It’s only been recently that our blog series Momentous Mondays has been indirectly coaxing me out of my music shell and widening my musical horizons. I’ve come to realise that mainstream music isn’t that bad at all, and if a song is great and inspirational, should it really matter about the faith of an artist? Isn’t it between them and God? Enough about philosophical things…this new song “Be A Light” (which I first heard about when Chris Tomlin tweeted about it!) is pretty good. For Chris Tomlin to be featured on a country song is a big deal, and for other country artists to be featured with Chris is a big deal as well. The groundbreaking 5 singer collaboration works pretty good (despite the 2:55 duration!), and as for the subject matter- well it’s all about being a light for the world and showing the world that we all can work in harmony and unity and be civilised human beings.

“Be A Light” is inspirational at its core, and even if you aren’t a fan of any of these artists…still check it out! Because no doubt in this season of just sitting and waiting on Jesus; we all need a song like “Be A Light” to bring a smile to our face and to reassure us that it’s all going to be ok. Sure, Thomas Rhett may not have intended the song to have that much weight attached to it (or maybe he did and this song was written quite quickly after the COVID-19 virus was discovered!), but the fact of the matter is that “Be A Light” is probably the most needed song of this year. So what are you waiting for? Listen to “Be A Light” and be encouraged and have hope and trust that we will overcome all with our loved ones and our friends by our side. Jesus is with us too, and as we be a light to others, let us bring Jesus to the world also! What better way to encourage others than to tell everyone about Jesus!
